Chair Yoga Certification

“The best prop for stability and alignment. Using a chair to support poses is like attaching training wheels to a bicycle and learning to ride.” ~Delia Quigley

November 3-4:  KULA HEART STUDIO,   Bethlehem, PA

The Chair Yoga Certification is designed for yoga teachers, yoga teachers-in-training, Pilates & aerobic instructors and personal trainers with yoga experience; and experienced yoga students. Using a chair to support poses will improve any level of yoga practice. In this weekend participants will learn to use a folding chair as a beneficial tool for all level of students and particularly for those who have a difficult time taking the average yoga class. The chair is an excellent prop for maintaining stability and alignment for individuals who have physical issues due to weight, inflexibility, age, or various physical limitations. It is also excellent for moving more advanced students deeper into a wide variety of poses.

In this intensive training teachers and therapists will learn to bring the benefits of yoga to their students and clients by utilizing yoga poses, breathing and total relaxation with the support of folding and other types of chairs. In the Ha-Tha Yoga Method Training we place an emphasis on providing trainees with tools of knowledge and experience to better create a yoga class based upon their students physical, emotional and mental needs, whether novice, beginner, intermediate or advanced.

The weekend will consist of an introduction lecture with a PowerPoint presentation, group discussion and review of hand out material. This is followed by a 1-hour Gentle Chair Yoga class, which allows participants to experience the dynamics and flow of a class for seniors, broken bodies, and/or novice yoga students. This is followed by the breakdown of a series of yoga poses with interruptions for lecture, group discussion, teaching and learning hands on adjustments.

[After participants experience each pose and sequence of poses they have the opportunity to teach the poses to each other. In this way they retain the information by immediately putting it into practice.]

Sunday begins with a Vinyasa flow style class using the chair to demonstrate how it can be incorporated into moving from pose to pose. This is followed by a a series of more intermediate and advanced poses designed to take more able bodied students deeper into yoga poses. This day includes teaching, creating a one hour class sequence from what has been presented and hands on practice.

  • In the Chair Yoga Certification participants will learn how to:
Teach up to 40 yoga postures using a folding chair.
Teach a one-hour therapeutic chair class for seniors & broken bodies.
Teach a one-hour vinyasa flow style class using a folding chair.
Choose appropriate postures to suit students individual needs.
Learn benefits, precautions and contraindications for each posture.
Learn the proper alignment for use with chair poses.
Learn how to sequence a gentle flow of poses to calm and focus the body-mind.
Leave the course with a written sequence of poses to begin teaching a class.

“The Chair Yoga training was an amazing experience. I not only learned how to safely lead a class for those who face challenges with their health and bodies, I learned how to deepen, strengthen and explore my own practice. Breathing new life into my yoga!!!” Tara T.

“Thank you for opening my eyes to the possible uses of the chair. I can now see that the chair can be used to enhance the practice of all yogis; from beginners to the more advanced. I plan on bringing these ideas into my own practice as well as my classes.” Norma B.

“I have been intimidated by the chair as a tool in class but now my confidence is 100% and will be including it into my personal practice and classes I teach. I have been to a few yoga workshops and I can say that the level of professionalism and structure of the class was greatly appreciated. Thank you for all the insight and tools you have provided.” Bill A.

“I really enjoyed the Chair Certification. For me, the most appealing aspect was that it was mixed level, but in-depth at each level. Postures were approached in a thorough but playful manner. While I attended with the intention of expanding my knowledge base as a teacher, I also deepened my personal practice. Thank you! Namaste.”

“Very pleased with the Chair Training. Felt it was well rounded to suit many needs. Easy to put into practice. Already started to bring it into my classes the very next day! Thank you! “ Roe P.

“Thank you for Wowing me! I now have so many new ways to add yoga to my personal training clients.”  Kim S.

“This course was exactly what I was looking for and then some. I felt that I was able to keep up, as someone who is not a yoga instructor, but was challenged physically as well (a nice bonus). My mental health clients will definitely benefit from what I learned this weekend. In the field of psychiatric rehabilitation there is a concept of show, tell, do. I like that we had the opportunity to be the student in the beginning classes, get the instruction, and then perform the teaching. A very helpful method for learning. Everyone was very kind and helpful. Thank You.” Molly M.

“I thought the workshop was inspiring and useful. I feel that asking us to teach each other solidified the course work.” Reggie W.

“The class/certification was very engaging, informative, helpful. I personally felt so successful, enthusiastic and on fire to have so much new information to share with my students and clients. I think format was perfect. I didn’t see any flaw. It was also wonderful to see how happy and inspired you both feel with this chair work.”  Barbara P.

“I truly enjoyed the class and learned so much. As always you were both extremely professional, fun, supportive and knowledgeable. I think the class was structured perfectly. Both AM classes were great at introducing the days postures, and were personally wonderful. After two long (and wonderful) days I appreciated the way we taught our class to each other. Thank you. It was great. Look forward to future workshops.”  Robin R.

“I thought the course was well organized, it covered a lot of material. I had so much fun in this course I would recommend it to other students and teachers to enhance their practice and their teaching. I loved the way we would learn a few posses and then teach them to someone in the class; and I like that we had to switch partners every time, so we could get used to teaching another person.” John F.

“As a teacher-in-training, the Chair Yoga Certification has enhanced my confidence in designing and teaching yoga classes; it has expanded by understanding of numerous postures; had has given me ideas to improve my own practice. The course structure was appropriately demanding and engaging. I appreciated the opportunity to practice teaching as I learned, and the classes we did each day provided a nice introduction to the poses. Delia and Denise are phenomenal teachers who foster a warm sense of community within the groups they instruct. This was a wonderful experience. Thank you both.”

“Thank you so much for your time and the energy you put into teaching us! It was organized and informative. I’m feeling happy and excited to incorporate what I learned in my practice and my classes. I personally feel fantastic and empowered. I will highly recommend this class to everyone I know!”  Meryl H.
