We Bid Winter Adieu

Spring day

BLUE GARDENIA
As we watch winter fade here at the Stone House and spring lift up out of our earth mother I asked the family how we should say good-bye this year. With a tilt of her head and a lift of her ears Maya replied that we should each contribute a favorite quote or poem and match it with a favorite moment on our walks in nature. And so we separated, each to our own thoughts until this morning when I found bits of paper, an index card, a book opened to a certain page and this is what we wish to share with you.

SEAMUS
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game
Joni Mitchell

Maya with yellow sky

MAYA
Through the weeks of deep snow
we walked above the ground
on fallen sky, as though we did
not come of root and leaf, as though
we had only air and weather
for our difficult home.
But now
as March warms, and the rivulets
run like birdsong on the slopes,
and the branches of light sing in the hills,
slowly we return to earth.
Wendell Berry

B&W Tess

TESSA
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and to see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover I had not lived.”
Henry David Thoreau

StillPoint

BLUE GARDENIA
At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement.
And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.
I can only say, there we have been: but I cannot say where
And I cannot say, how long, for that is to place it in time.
T.S. Eliot
