Those Dam Beavers

I have a story to tell

[Tessa Narrates]

Look at me, sitting out on the medicine stone on a foggy December morning and the temperature is climbing towards the high 60’s. Something’s wrong with this picture, but no one seems to mind and me and the pups are out running the land unsupervised for a change.

MAYA
Hey, Tessa, have you heard the news?

TESSA
What news? Climate change is global warming and polar bears are relocating to New Jersey?

SEAMUS
Hahahaha, good one crazy cat, but no, not polar bears..

MAYA
Yeah, mom’s upset because they want to do away with the beaver clan.

TESSA
You mean they want to relocate the beavers, right? Like give them refugee status and transport them to another pond across the county.

SEAMUS
That’s what mom wants to do, but there’s a law against making beavers refugee’s so instead they just do away with them.

TESSA
It’s Christmas, for chrissake and they’re bringing traps to set up for a big Santa surprise?

MAYA
The beaver clan has grown too large. They’ve built the dam to fill the pond to cover their underwater habitat.

Beaver working

SEAMUS
Yeah, they’ve been conducting tree chewing classes for the four young beavers who have nothing to do, so best keep them busy.

TESSA
I saw the man from the upstairs window, yelling at the beaver because they closed back up the dam when he opened it last night.

MAYA
Right, as if….

SEAMUS
So, then the guy tore a whole in the dam big enough to drain the entire pond, but the clan managed to rebuild just in time. Did you see where their huts rose up as the water level went way down? Bet they were pissed off.

MAYA
War has been declared between the men and the beaver clan. Bring in the heavy weapons. It’s no more Mister Nice Guy, the beaver clan must cooperate or die.

SEAMUS
So, it’s death to the beaver clan, cause Mother Nature ain’t going to cooperate. Heeheee, bet those rascals are hard to catch.

TESSA
Nooooo, that’s just not right. They are an intricate part of this eco-system, there must be a way for everyone to live together peacefully.

Tess & Maya

MAYA
Since when did you become a peace activist, bird hunter? You know the routine. When the Natural world steps out of line and interferes with human design we get culled and destroyed. The Law of Human Nature.

TESSA
I like watching the beaver’s from the upstairs window. They are brilliant engineers and workers. They put in a night of labor cutting down trees and building their homes, managing the dam and then they play in the moonlight rolling and diving and chattering away in beaver talk.

SEAMUS
Which is just what they’re not supposed to be doing. Have you figured out what they’re saying yet?

TESSA
What any of us would say at a moment like that….life is good, we’ve got it made, give thanks for all that we have in this moment.

MAYA
Well they best enjoy the moment because they will soon be beaver hats keeping someone’s head warm.

TESSA
Bummer.

SEAMUS
Have you noticed though how the ducks and geese have returned since the pond went down?

TESSA
I have, and the blue heron can now stand in the shallows and easily spear a fish.

MAYA
I know, it’s as if more wildlife have showed up to feed and the beaver’s have gone into hiding.

TESSA
Mom says rains are coming and the pond will fill back up again.

SEAMUS
It’s winter, isn’t it? So the snow will come, the ice will melt and the pond will threaten to flood the dam again.

TESSA
The cycle of life, of all our lives.

MAYA
And no human can ever change that.
