What’s Your Chakra?

It was a beautiful morning

[Maya Narrates]

It was a beautiful morning. The breeze had blown the fog from the pond and the blue heron took flight across the marsh grass. We were laying on the porch after our morning run and I was looking out on the scene when the question arose.

MAYA
Seamus, hey, Shay, wake up.

SEAMUS
Hunh? What, what? Danger?

MAYA
No, relax, I have a question for you.

SEAMUS
Oh……well don’t scare me like that…..what is it?

MAYA
What’s a chakra?

SEAMUS
A what?

What's a Chakra?

MAYA
A chakra. You know those things mom is always talking about that my first chakra is excessive and you’re having a heart chakra moment. What is she talking about?

SEAMUS
Oh, well, they’re, like ummm, points of energy in our astral body that correspond to the nerve plexus of our physical body.

MAYA
And?

SEAMUS
Well, actually you should talk to Tessa about some of this stuff. She’s knows the whole thing about kundalini energy and the nadis crisscrossing each chakra along the sushumna.

MAYA
You mean, Swami Tessadananda, enlightened feline guru?
[Read that line again, but with dripping sarcasm.]

SEAMUS
She’s the one who taught me.

[Of course at the sound of her name Miss Swami leaped with ease four feet onto the porch, then another three feet onto the table ready to enlighten the “inferior doggies”, (her words, not mine).]

Swami Tessadananda

TESSA
What’s up, inferior doggies? Did I hear my name called?

SEAMUS
Maya asked me what a chakra is.

TESSA
Hah! I predict that one day the major pick up line in bars will be to ask “What’s your Chakra?”

SEAMUS
Hahahahahaha, like in the 70’s when they asked, “What’s your sign”? A whole generation of children were conceived because of that one line.

TESSA
Right? And the next generation will be conceived discussing spinning colored wheels of light radiating along the rainbow bridge.

MAYA
I thought the Rainbow Bridge was a gay rights group.

TESSA
Hey, mom remember when your student wrote the lyrics to the Clash song, Rock the Casbah.

[Big mistake Tessa, cause now mom’s singing like she knows how to do that. Let’s just ignore her.]

Let's just ignore her.

MOM
Oh, yeah, let’s see, how did it go?
When your feeling out of balance
Rock your chakra’s
Unlock your chakra’s
Get that aura glowing
Rock your chakra’s
Unblock your chakra’s

[Mom actually gave her student high marks for those lyrics, and to a Clash song, can you believe it?]

SEAMUS
What’s your chakra, mom?

MOM
Hmmmmm, I would have to say that right now I am throat chakra, speaking my truth and hearing all the little white lies.

MAYA
It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus, you guys. I for one do not see any spinning disks moving on your or anyone’s spine.

MOM
Show some respect, little girl, the movement of energy through each chakra is steeped in thousands of years of Indian Yogic tradition. The seven centers of energy run through the core of the physical body exerting influence over the function and health of the organs, the glands, the bones, joints, the…..

TESSA
We get the picture, mom. Not only is the health of the body assisted by the balance of each chakra, but according to Carl Jung, they are also essential to the awakening of consciousness in the individual.

SEAMUS
Correctamundo, oh revered Swami. Jung used the chakra’s to map out the journey of an individual from the moment of conception through each stage of life to possible liberation, if they cared to practice that long.

MAYA
Ok, so how do they relate to moi, because that’s all I care about in this moment of time-space continuum.

[I wanted them to know I had a few fancy phrases to throw around too. Have to keep the playing field even.]

TESSA
Well, let’s start with the first chakra, located at the base of the spine, it means root support and pertains to survival and grounding. Fear is common when money is low or one’s job or life is threatened. Oh, yeah, the color is red, first color of the rainbow.

SEAMUS
Second chakra is located in the genital area. It represents desire and sexual energy. Guilt creates imbalance in this chakra and religions play this chakra like the strings on a lute. It’s color is orange.

MOM
Wow, I’m still amazed you know who the Clash are.

SEAMUS
Mom, come on, your turn.

MOM
Ok, the third chakra is located in the solar plexus area. It governs our will, self-esteem, power and shame is the big downer for this energy. I could spend all day talking about this….

TESSA
No need, mom. After lifetimes of floundering around in the lower three chakras human beings attempt to raise their conscious to the heart and fourth chakra. Here the color becomes green, and ideally the issues are love, kindness and compassion, although anger and hatred tend to win out in the human nature.

SEAMUS
Above the heart is the throat chakra, where the color is turquoise blue and the issues are, pay attention Maya, communication, listening, finding your voice; while the negative bits are the lies we tell to others and ourselves.

MAYA
Wait, I know the next one is located right between the eyes, the third eye. Yes! It allows for a glimpse within. It covers dreams, imagination and our ability to visualize; that is if we can or want to see through our illusions. Color is, ummm, uhhh, oh, damn…

TESSA
Ha! Indigo. Which brings us to the seventh and final chakra, the thousand-petalled lotus. Located at the crown of the head the kundalini energy train stops here awakening a knucklehead human to pure consciousness; and all the long hours of practice and meditation have paid off.

MOM
Whew, all that talk of chakras has made me hungry. Anyone else hungry?

MAYA-TESSA-SEAMUS
Me!

MOM
Ok, then, let’s feed our belly chakra, and we can deal with the rest later.

The seven chakras

  1. I have a similar hanging in my sacred space!

I think I’m a dominant with my 3rd eye or crown chakra. I continually work to be more grounded.
