A GPS for Living Life

Bee Pollinating Lily

[bluegardenia4 narrates]

what constitutes a life well lived?
the hero sets off along the path
and before she knows it the direction
has veered
twisting and turning
in a labyrinth of uncertainty and confusion

which way to go?
what if there was a GPS voice
one to provide you choices
at crucial moments of indecision
and not too many
three doors behind which your future awaits
…………………………………………………………………….

MAYA
Mom, remember what Karlfried Graf Dürckheim wrote?

MOM
Who?

I hear Seamus and Tessa laughing behind me. A guffaw really.

TESSA
Wait, let me tell it.
“When you’re on a journey, and the end keeps getting further and further away, then you realize that the real end is the journey.”

The long path

MOM
Sigh.

SEAMUS
Did someone die, mom?

MOM
The old lady on the other side of the house.

MAYA
Yes, of course, how did I miss it? There has been a lot of tension in the air come to think of it, but I thought it was the rain.

TESSA
Yeah, the rain, and then more rain…..

MOM
Plus…even more rain. Yes, the hero’s journey is on pause at this flooded junction. The question now is which way to go?

MAYA
Put your nose to the air, mom, and breathe in deep. It’s all there to discover; but there are also so many other delicious smells, like rabbit, deer, apples falling from the trees.

TESSA
What inferior doggie is trying to tell you, is stop and smell a passing breeze. When you do you will gather all the information you need to know about which direction to take.

SEAMUS
Well said, Maestro.

MOM
The old lady was an atheist, she didn’t believe in the existence of a God. I think that’s why she hung on to life for so long.

TESSA
Marco told me that she lived life on her own terms.

MAYA
Since when are you talking to Marco?

SEAMUS
What the hell, Tessa.

TESSA
Yeah, well, we met up in the blackberry patch last week and he was huddled down looking real sad. So I sat down thinking he might want to maybe apologize for terrorizing me this past year; but instead he just started talking and then there was no stopping him – the dude can talk – I mean like hours.

MOM
Was this before or after he took a chunk out of Maya’s face while I was away.

MAYA
Tension was running high here, mom. I was anxious you were not coming back and I see now that Marco was watching his mom dying and we took it out on each other. I gave as good as I got.

SEAMUS
High five, bro.

MOM
Seriously? Since when did we move to the ‘hood?

TESSA
They acted from their emotions rather than first thinking it through to a peaceful conclusion. Similar to the way a life plays out. You start out with the best intentions of going a certain direction, then life throws you out the window of a speeding car and says, “Deal with it!”

SEAMUS
What if we had a built in GPS! We would hear a mechanical, yet life like voice recalibrate the direction each time we started to veer off course.

Getting distracted

MOM
Mine would have quit long ago having become very confused.

MAYA
I’ve heard that we come into life with a destiny, umm…a direction, a goal or is it a quota we have to meet. Anyway it’s part of the process for evolving as a spiritual being.

SEAMUS
And imagine how helpful it would be to have a GPS voice warn you when you careen off into a Corporate job when the Arts hold your true bliss.

TESSA
Cool! The voice stops you dead in your tracks saying, “You are about to make a huge mistake marrying that bozo, and it will cost you 10 years of your precious life.” You might think twice…

MOM
Or how about, “Do you really want to poke a needle into your vein and spend the rest of your life in and out of rehab centers trying to kick the habit of…”

MAYA
Mom! Mom, too much information. Just a simple, “STOP now or DIE” would suffice.

MOM
Yes, but isn’t our intuition our natural GPS? Do we really need more things programmed into our bodies and minds? How about we just listen to the real voice inside us; really listen and then act with integrity on what we hear.

TESSA
Wow, now that would be a novel experience. Imagine actually paying attention long enough to see the path right in front of your eyes. Actually, that’s what meditation helps you to do.

SEAMUS
Yeah, it allows you the time to listen, smell, taste the air of possibility before leaping out and landing in a big pile of doo doo.

MAYA
Aww, dude, reducing the moment down to a dogs life. We’re trying to help mom envision this journey on a human level.

SEAMUS
I stand by what I said…..veer off the path without considering the consequences of your actions will land you in a big pile of doo doo.

MOM
Have to say I agree with Seamus, My.

TESSA
Me too.

Maya on Moss Path

MAYA
[Using a mechanical voice]
Take the next right and make a full turn back to the road. Make sure to give Maya a treat before proceeding.

SEAMUS
Now that’s the kind of GPS I want to have.

Enjoyed this. I’m glad I ignored my intuition about the bozo,
he did give me two of the most precious gifts!
